CLASSIC COLONIAL HAWAII—Perched on the sea cliffs of historic Hakalau, this is a rare and perfectly preserved example of old, Colonial Hawaii. Once a thriving sugar mill town, Hakalau is now a small, quiet residential ocean side community 30 minutes north of Hilo International Airport. Originally built as the grand residence for the Hakalau Sugar Plantation Manager in 1916, the estate continues to dominate the landscape as one of the most elegant and historically significant structures on the Big Island. Through the years the home has been lovingly preserved and improved, maintaining the original floor plan and construction details. Built of redwood with true dimensional lumber, the home has withstood the test of time for 91 years. The main residence of 4 bedrooms and 3 ˝ baths consists of approximately 5,000 square feet surrounded on 3 sides by sweeping, elegant verandas over looking the gardens and the view of the ocean. The luxurious grace and style of the 3+ acre estate represent a bygone era, one which lives on today by virtue of the uniqueness, quality and rare nature of the property. A separate and private 1945, 1 bedroom and 1 bath caretaker/guest cottage with its own garage and driveway, a greenhouse, and the original carriage house comprise the same aesthetics, further completing the historic picture of the era. Thriving upon the 3 acres exist a magical and breathtaking botanical bounty of old growth flora and fauna; 40’ to 60’ Banyan, Norfolk Pine and Magnolia trees, multiple and rare specimens of ginger, banana, ti leaf, hibiscus, gardenias, avocados, bromeliads, orchids, plumeria, anthuriums and ferns. The front yard boasts one of the largest Puakenikeni trees in the area; a highly prized fragrant flower of significance used for lei and traditional adornment. As one approaches and enters this property, there is a marked sense of peace and perfection as can only be found in a unique and truly rare property such as this. Local Area Information:
Hakalau is a small village located along the Hamakua coast about 15 miles north of Hilo. It was once a thriving, multi-ethnic sugar plantation town up until the early 1960s at which time the plantation began to be phased-out. Small family farms now exist growing tropical fruits, flowers, coffee, or cattle. Hâmâkua lies on the north coast of the big island of Hawai‘i and is approximately fifty miles long ending at Waipi‘o Valley. Hâmâkua is used loosely to describe the region between Hilo and Waipio, although the Hâmâkua judicial district begins somewhere North of Laupahoehoe. Hamâkuâ translates to "breath of god." Many little towns sprang up around sugar plantations (one of them being Hakalau) which were operating along the Hâmâkua Coast from around the turn of the twentieth century until approximately 1990. Driving the Hâmâkua Coast from Hilo to Kohala is a very scenic and can be completed in about an hour.
